Face to Face with Mystery

Today we come face to face with the mystery and wonder of the unique event described in John 1:1-16. God broke through into our time and world to be with us. This is the moment toward which or Advent preparation pointed us. This is the unbelievable moment when God touched this earth of ours in a unique way, when God visited us on earth in the flesh of a little Child. This Child brings to us the promise of a new beginning, a promise freighted with hope, a promise that fills us with inner joy, an inward peace and stability that no one will ever be able to take away from us.

As God comes to us again this Christmas to renew and strengthen us through the gift of Jesus, God doesn’t ask us to blind ourselves to reality. God doesn’t ask us to close our eyes to the hungry and disenfranchised. God doesn’t expect us to make believe that everything is OK in this world and in our lives.

Think again of the world in which Elizabeth and Mary lived: death and disease, poverty and ruthless power, human life held cheap. Yet they continued to live in hope because something extraordinary, something from the world beyond them was unfolding before them. Zechariah and Elizabeth, hopelessly old, were given a child to prepare the way for the One who would bring light and life into the darkness of this world. Righteous Joseph and the young virgin, Mary, carrying the One who would set us free from in. No wonder they were filled with inner joy.

Tomorrow we will celebrate, in all its fullness, the good news of Christmas. The Word became flesh to live with us, share our life and conquer death. The Word comes to give us power to become the children of God. The Word comes to be with us all the way, in every way, always.

May you celebrate the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, with the fresh vision of a child. And may God’s Son, Jesus Christ, lead you to hope, peace, joy and love as you anticipate His coming again in triumphal glory!  Have a Merry Christmas!
