Like a Weighted Blanket

My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.

Psalm 119:50 NIV

Let me tell you about one of my many quarks. I need to sleep under a blanket whether it’s during a hot summer night or the dead of winter. For some reason, the weight of a blanket allows me to sleep much more soundly. While I haven’t yet invested in a weighted blanket, I understand that they’re excellent in preventing or dealing with anxiety. Not to mention that they’re fairly expensive, too. Research suggests that a weighted blanket can calm an anxious, fidgety, or traumatized person and can have a measurable “settling” effect for those who struggle emotionally.

I would imagine the effect is similar to swaddling a newborn (Guys, if you’re not sure what that is, ask your wife or girlfriend). Tucked snugly into the wrap-around blanket, a person, whether child or adult, feels secure, calmed, and comforted by the weight and warmth that enfolds them.

We need to admit that we’ll sometimes go through seasons of anxiety (perhaps like the one that ended on election day this week). Knowing you’re being held by a God who’s your comfort in suffering means allowing yourself to notice the “weight” of an embrace you might not physically feel but is nonetheless real. God is your weighted blanket. Holding you. Stilling your restlessness. Speaking His gentle words to your turmoil-filled soul. Calming your anxious heart. Will you allow God’s blanketing presence to be your comfort in your pain today? When you’re too numb to notice, the Lord is your strong arms, holding you. His healing words are a grown-up lullaby for your soul!

For those of you who will be worshiping at the Mt. Laurel Church of God this coming Sunday, November 10, God’s message through Pastor Dale will be from Job 42:1-17. Consider reading this Scripture before coming to worship or before watching on Facebook so your heart is ready to hear the Holy Spirit’s voice.
