"Are You an Optimist or a Pessimist?”
I “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8, NIV
Which are you? An optimist or a pessimist? The pessimist will see a glass filled to the half-way point with water as being half empty. The optimist sees the same glass with water being half full. The optimistically creative person will see it as a vase for a rosebud. The optimistic pragmatist will see that water glass as a way to quench one’s thirst. The optimistic Lutheran pastor will see that glass as water to bless for baptism.
Personally, I prefer to be an optimist. Perhaps the following will tell you why.
Two frogs fell into a deep bowl of cream.
One was an optimistic soul;
But the other took the gloomy view,
“I shall drown,” he cried, “and so will you.”
So with a last despairing cry,
He closed his eyes and said, “Good-bye.”
But the other frog, with a merry grin
Said, “I can’t get out, but I won’t give in!
I’ll swim around till my strength is spent.
For having tried, I’ll die content.”
Bravely he swam until it would seem
His struggles began to churn the cream.
On the top of the butter at last he stopped
And out of the bowl he happily hopped.
What is the moral? It’s easily found.
If you can’t get out, keep swimming around!
Keep swimming, my friend, and, with God’s help, you’ll end up on top!,
