Midweek Encouragement - "Direction at Night”
"Direction at Night”
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Psalm 16:7-8 NIV
I recently had cataracts removed from both of my eyes. Before that surgery, driving at night was starting to get a little dicey. Driving at night is always more difficult than driving during daylight hours because it’s more difficult to see what’s ahead. Did you ever drive at night without your headlights on? About fifteen years ago Pamela and I were taking an autumn drive in her convertible on moon-lit night. The moon seemed so bright that I surely thought I could turn off the headlights and still see. I was wrong. Driving without lights was impossible.
King David, who wrote Psalm 16, was a military person. He understood the need for good light at night. He understood the need for protection from being afraid. As God’s teachings filled his mind he could “see” even on the darkest night, and with God to protect him from fear, he had direction for his life.
Maybe you’ve been feeling like you’ve been living in a constant “night.” Has bad news and uncertain times made you feel that the world is a dark place? Like King David, you can say to God, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11 NIV).
God is available to you through His Word, the Bible. Sometimes He speaks through others. Sometimes, if you’re still and quiet, God will speak to you through the voice of the Holy Spirit.
When you need direction in that dark night of your soul, it’s best to look where the light is shining. Follow God’s voice to see His path that leads back to joy. Pray this prayer with me please:
O God, my Father, my life is feeling dark, even during the daylight. Turn me always in the direction of the true light that comes from You. Help me to hear You speak and give me guidance that meets my needs today. Help me to know the truth and to act in ways that are just and right. Fill my life with joy . . . the joy that comes from being at Your side. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
