Midweek Encouragement - “Faults are Thick Where Love is Thin”

“Faults are Thick Where Love is Thin”

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”

1 Peter 4:8, NIV

Did you ever notice that we often put ourselves in the best light, even when we’re putting others down? Perhaps that’s human nature. I think Jesus had another word for it. See if you notice it in His words recorded in Matthew 7:3-5.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

         Have you ever noticed . . .

When others are set in their ways, they’re obstinate . . . but you’re firm and resolved.

When your neighbor doesn’t like your friend, she’s prejudiced . . . but when you don’t like her friend, you’re a good judge of human nature.

When he takes time to do things well, he’s lazy . . . but when you do so, you’re meticulous.

When she tries to treat someone especially well, she’s buttering up the person . . . but when you do so, you’re being thoughtful.

         When he spends a lot, he’s a spendthrift . . . but when you overdo, you’re generous.

When he finds many flaws in how things are done, he’s critical . . . but when you do, you’re perceptive.

When she’s mild-mannered, you call her weak . . . but when you are, you’re gracious.

When he dresses well, he’s extravagant . . . but when you do, you’re tastefully in style.

When she says what she thinks, she’s spiteful . . . but when you do, you’re being honest.

When he takes great risks, he’s foolhardy . . . but when you do, you’re brave.

My friend, God has given us His Word to serve as a mirror of our souls. Let me encourage you to take some time and stand before His mirror. Is your life too critical lately? In our relationships with others, let love rule the day because God’s kind of love does, indeed, cover over a multitude of sins. Tone down that critical spirit and try to see the best in others through the eyes of Christ’s love. And if you’re reading this week’s Mid-Week Encouragement and think you’re perfect, I’d LOVE to meet you!

For those of you who will be in worship at the Mt. Laurel Church of God this coming Sunday, June 9, the message will be from this Scripture:

Mark 3:20-35
