A Meeting at the Well

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

John 4:13-14 NIV

Jesus had been traveling all morning. Around noon, He came to a well. It was a hot day. The road was dusty. And He needed a drink. And that’s when He encountered a woman at the well.

Here’s what Jesus knew: she was at the well at the wrong time of the day. Women typically gathered water in the morning, not during the heat of the day, and so this woman had chosen to go at noon for a reason. Maybe she had gone in the heat of the day because she thought no one would be there. But on that day, Jesus was there.



Jesus knew she’d be going to the well at that time. He even knew more about her and the Living Water she really needed. You see, God always meets you where you are. He specializes in meeting you in your brokenness. You might think life has brought you to a certain place because you’re just looking for some kind of refreshment, but Jesus meets you there because He knows you’re looking for healing, security, and love.

Ultimately, we’re all the woman at the well. Jesus shows up in your life, wherever your well may be, and offers you Living Water. He offers you everything you need. Yet you often keep looking for all those other things to fill yourself up . . . your kids, your marriage, your finances, your home, and your good deeds. Jesus looks at you with love and asks, “Aren’t you ready for the real thing that will make you feel full?”

How deeply have you buried your hope, your faith, and your dreams that you don’t think anyone can salvage them? What are the wells in your life? Do you trust Jesus to meet you there?

When I read John 4:15, the woman said to Jesus, “Give me this water,” I remember how lost I felt in my early teens. I was searching for anything other than God to fill me up. I was longing for some sense of meaning and belonging and security. I looked for it in popularity and sports and in trying to look a certain way. But then I came face-to-face with Jesus and exposed all my brokenness. And I knew I’d finally found the Living Water I didn’t know I was looking for.

That’s the grace of God. He meets you at the wells of your life and gives you everything you need and so much more. My friend, why are you still looking? Trust me when I say that Jesus wants to satisfy your deepest thirst. Do you know Him? And if you do know Him, are you allowing Him to have the most important place in your life? If you don’t know Him, what’s preventing you from drinking from His well of peace, joy, and unconditional love? When you let Him satisfy your thirst, you’ll never go looking anywhere else.
