"Drinking Out of the Saucer”

But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14 NIV

Did you know that the human body is 60% water? If you could separate the water in your body from the other stuff, the bones, brain, muscles and skin, you’d see that you’re mostly water. Obviously, that’s not a science experiment you definitely DON’T want to sign up to do!

I’m going to sound like an old guy when I say this, but I remember the day when very few people carried an adult sippy cup, water bottle, or drink container wherever they went so they could “stay hydrated.” When we needed a drink, we bent over a water fountain or took a glass to the faucet.

Did you know that plants are better hydrated than we humans are? Many plants are nearly 90% water. What appears to be mostly leaf, stem, and root is actually a whole lot of water. Jellyfish, however, make we human beings and plants seem dry in comparison. Those fascinating animals are 95% water!

In John 4:14, Jesus made a bold promise using water as a metaphor or word picture. The water He was describing is nothing like ordinary water. His water is filled to overflowing with power. The water Jesus offers is 100% holy, 100% life-giving, and 100% satisfying. His water is the Holy Spirit Himself.

John 7:37-39 says this, “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.”

As a kid, I remember my grandmother serving coffee in china cups and saucers. That was back in the day when a good hostess used her very best china rather than pulling old mugs from the cupboard. The saucer under the delicate cup would catch any liquid that inadvertently overflowed from the cup. One particular pastor loved visiting Sadie, his favorite shut-in. His first question to her was always, “Sadie, how in the world are you today?” And Sadie would always respond, “I’m so blessed with the power of the Spirit, that I’m drinking from the saucer!” Sadie considered her life so full of the Holy Spirit’s blessings and power that her cup of joy was overflowing and she was “drinking from the saucer.”

At the moment you invited Jesus to occupy the core of your heart, God gave you the Holy Spirit, filling you to overflowing with living water. Just as earthly water brings life and quenches thirst, the living waters of the Holy Spirit bring forever life and the soul-quenching gifts of God that flow from His presence in us.

This means, Christ-follower, that you’re not just 60% ordinary water; you’re also 100% living water! Christian, within you lives the powerful, life-giving Holy Spirit. In a world that’s parched and powerless, you’re a conduit, a channel of life that will never run dry.

Because you have drunk deeply of those living waters, your mind can stop being preoccupied with worry! You’re rooted and built up in Christ. Drink up! Out of your heart will flow rivers of living water! Those around you will see the difference, so be prepared to share the water of life, Jesus Christ, with them today!

Drinking from the saucer and blessed beyond measure,

Pastor Dale
