Midweek Encouragement - "Little-G Gods”

“Little-G Gods”

             ^{Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.}

^{Deuteronomy 4:39 NIV}

         ^{After escaping from a culture where most people worshiped all kinds of little-g gods, the newly freed Israelites faced old temptations. Worshiping idols, a hangover from their many years in Egypt, seemed logical. It was much easier to worship a stone-god they could see than the God they couldn’t see, even if He had been responsible for their escape.}

         ^{Let’s not be too quick to overly criticize the Israelites, however. Today we’re also tempted to turn to the visible . . . our bank accounts, our families, our occupations, our long-held religious traditions . . . imagining that these provide safety and security. But none of us is exempt from difficulties. When the Israelites, in fear during God’s seeming absence, wanted to worship idols, Moses spelled it out: No pretend-god could lead them with fire and clouds, deliver them with God’s presence and great strength. No other!}

         ^{No matter what falls apart in our lives, there is no other God! Not stuff or status or safety. Not even how we’ve always “done church” is sufficient to see us through. The one true God has rescued us, loved us, led us. Nothing, nothing, nothing changes that. Nothing ever will. You, my friend, can take that to heart. God is in heaven. God is on earth. And that about covers it.}

^{Dear God, even though I can’t see You, I know You’re here. Thank You for being the One!}
