Perfect in Every Way?

Perfect in Every Way?

This is going to sound unbelievable, but recently someone contacted me and asked if I could help them with their pride. Their actual question was, “How can I become more humble?” This impressed me for two reasons. (1) Most people don’t recognize pride in their lives and, (2) it they do, it’s not likely that they’ll be brave enough, or humble enough, to find help.

So I got to thinking . . . What practical things could we do that might lead us to humility? Here’s what I came up with. Maybe you could add to the list. They are; talk less, reveal less, and invest more.

1. Talk less. Giving up the need to always have an opinion, an answer, or a solution for everything, is a nice break from the pressure we feel to have an opinion, an answer, or a solution for everything. There’s a reason why many monks took vows of silence. They believed that by merely talking less, a person could experience God more, and the experience of humility that pleases Him.

2. Reveal less. Avoiding every opportunity to draw attention to ourselves or our accomplishments will surely lead to more humility. It’s amazing how easy it is for us to sneak self-flattery into our conversations.

3. Invest more time alone with Jesus. When we spend time in silence and solitude with our Lord, the meek and humble Jesus rubs off on us. His character slowly changes our character, especially in the area of pride.

So if you want to be more humble, a good place to start will be to talk less, reveal less, and invest more time alone with Jesus.
