“Too Weak to Care”
“Too Weak to Care”
Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.”
1 Kings 19:3-5 NIV
Funny thing about we humans. We work so very hard to hide our weaknesses especially when disappointment, rejection, or depression threatens to flatten us. When someone asks how you are, what do you say? Chances are your response is, “I’m fine,” choking on the words. “How’s life? It’s okay,” we answer. And the pain of the truth writhes inside us.
Intellectually even if we can hide our feelings from those around us, we know we can’t hide them from God. So what’s the point of trying? Too often we’d rather die . . . figuratively or not . . . than admit our weakness to Him or to others. You’ve probably been there. Crises seem to pile one on top of another. The intensity of your distress seems to increase exponentially with each passing hour. You’d pray but for some reason you can’t seem to muster the energy or the desire to do so.
Funny thing is that God knows that, too. His response to your disappointment, rejection, or depression is no different than it was millennia ago when He observed Elijah’s weakness. And Elijah’s weakness, perhaps like your very own, was so profound that he begged to die rather than have to go on. But God didn’t turn His back on Elijah and nor will He turn His back on you. He sent an angel to Elijah to touch His hurting, drained, nothing-left-in-the-tank servant.
So keep your eyes open today, my friend. Perhaps today, when you least expect to, you’ll see one of God’s angels, sent to help you in your time of distress or depression. Why would God do that for you? Because your weakness sends an alarm to God who dispatches the help you need exactly when you need it. That’s how much He cares for you!
For those of you who will be worshiping at the Mt. Laurel Church of God this coming Sunday, October 13, God’s message through Pastor Dale will be from Job 23:1-7. Consider reading this Scripture before coming to worship or before watching on Facebook so your heart is ready to hear the Holy Spirit’s voice.
